To my clients, here’s what I want you to know:
I think about you all the time, not just when I’m running a therapy session or modifying your protocol. I think about you on weekends and holidays, and as I’m going to sleep every night.
What am I thinking about you? I am thinking of the blessing that God has granted that I get to know you, and your family, and I am praying that I am a blessing to you.
I pray for you. I pray for before our sessions, that you would do well, and so would I…I pray for the anointing of the Holy Spirit over my work to do the right things, and help to improve your life. I am also praying that you would be receptive to my intervention…I pray to understand you, so that I can be effective at helping you become the best version of yourself, and daily acknowledging that I can do nothing without the help of the Savior, who made you and knows all the answers, and is the greatest behavior analyst.
You are the reason I continue to learn, take CEU’s, and take horrible PhD statistics courses…because I want to be the best I can, so that you can have the best I can offer.
I am willing to do the hard work with you. There is no tantrum, no amount of tears, no amount of physical aggression that would make me walk away from helping you reach your full potential. I believe in you and your progress and I am willing to do the hard work with you and for you to get there, because you are fearfully and wonderfully made, and you have so much to offer the world. Your development is worth the cost of my convenience, my time, my energy, my patience, my eardrums, and sometimes even my skin. I will always separate the behavior from the person. In far greater measure, this is what the Savior chooses to do with us for our whole lives…I hope I can be a reflection of that.
You fill the hearts of those around you, including your BCBA.
You remind me of the Savior’s love.
Your smile is contagious, and my goal is to teach you skills that keep that smile on your face, even if that means you don’t like me for a few minutes because I told you we had to earn tokens, or asked you to pick up your toys. This is like what the Savior does for us, time and time again asking things of us that we don’t like or don’t understand…in the end, we are better, and we are happy, and He is willing to take the heat.
Your development is my biggest priority; the wellbeing of your family is my second. I may be with you for a few hours, but they are with you and for you 24/7, and I am here for them just as I am here for you! I never want your family to feel like they have to do it all alone.
My prayers for you and passion for your continued development do not stop when I stop working with you. You have left a handprint on my heart and will forever be remembered with fondness. To those who are no longer my clients, you still make me smile.
You’re not the only one with a behavior plan… you’re not the only one who needs a behavior analyst. We all need the greatest behavior analyst, our Creator and Savior, the Lord of Heaven and Earth, who takes us into His care…except in this case, it isn’t for a few months or a few years…it’s for life. Patiently He runs trials with us over and over until behaviors that shouldn’t be there decrease, and all the good things He desires for us increase. Just like in ABA, there is waiting, there is direct instruction, there is generalization to other environments, there is tolerance training, there is even functional communication training. All things reflect His glory, and ABA is no exception. You reflect His glory too, and as I work with you I am reminded of how He works with me. You reflect the kingdom of Heaven more than you will ever know.
My heart was bursting at the seams to say all these things I want you to know.
This redeemed BCBA.
